I have moved four hundred and six things that didn't belong to me.

I never looked at any of them. That was the rule. A thing is a thing, and if you start seeing people in them you stop being able to do the job.

Then I opened a crate in Rotterdam at two in the morning and found a shield with a joke painted on it.

Nine weeks later there's a man following me through the rain on a motorcycle, doing an unforgivably bad job of it, and he says the thing in my crate belonged to his mother.

His mother died a thousand years ago.

The men who own me want the shield, and they've offered me my freedom for it, and I've been counting the days since I was nineteen.

So how do I tell him the price of setting me free is him?
