Taken For a Ride

(2022)
A novel by

Another racing thriller from the author of Fall From Grace, Hoodwinked, Making Allowances, Twelve in the Sixth, The Gift Horse and Rank Outsiders.

If Finn McCarthy, jockey coach, thought he was in for a quiet year as the jumps season is about to start, he's very much mistaken. For starters, one of the conditional jockeys he mentors is arrested for drink driving and then he is asked to mentor a young man, whose father he knows very well, for all for the wrong reasons. Then he and his side kick, dietician Harriet Lucas, are asked to find a missing horse, Admiral Jervis.
The story is that the owner, Ross Maclaren, famous author, took away his horses, including Admiral Jervis, after an argument over training fee debts. Ross then sent the trainer a rare and valuable painting of the celebrated horse, Red Navajo, as surety for the debt. The argument spiralled out of control and the trainer is regretful and determined for Finn and Harriet to track down Ross Maclaren, so that Admiral Jervis can be returned to his yard. The only trouble is that the author is struggling with writer's block and is in hiding whilst he finishes his latest book and Admiral Jervis appears to have been sold.
The painting of Red Navajo becomes a focus as Finn and Harriet attempt to track down Ross Maclaren. They find themselves involved in the art world, where not everything is as it seems. It is clear that somebody is being taken for a ride, but who? Then when a stable girl is murdered, they are left to join up the dots to reveal the whole picture. They discover that murderer is closer than they think and that they need to re-evaluate friendships and seemingly unrelated events to discover the truth.
