Adolescence creates in Kate a hunger which she can't explain and which transforms her hatred of meat into desire. At college she embraces religion, but her biblical studies lead her into seeing the world as a vast meat stew, a primordial soup of ever-changing ingredients. Sex seems to offer salvation until she combines it with her hunger for meat.
