I just found out the sweet single dad who brings his daughter into my bookstore every Sunday is secretly a billionaire.
A month ago a developer bought my building, and now I have three days before they tear the whole store down.
It’s the last thing my grandmother left me, and I’ve run it on my own since the day she passed.
Every Sunday I read to his little girl while he settles into the armchair in the corner, sometimes joining in to voice the characters.
Today she found a crumpled eviction notice tucked behind one of the shelves.
She held it up and asked, ‘Daddy, what does... eh-vic-shun mean?’
Before he could take it from her, she flipped it over and pointed at the bottom, ‘That’s our last name!’
The room went still.
I looked at the paper, then at him, the man who’d been laughing along in my store all this time.
I turned to him and asked,
‘How long have you known?’
