In the summer of 1812 the Emperor Napoleon invaded Russia, supported by an army of half a million men. Major Alain d'Albert and Major Emil Durand, who had followed the 'Man of Destiny' for sixteen years, had some reservations about this latest venture, but accepted the challenge nonetheless and marched with the rest. At Dresden they encountered the enchanting Julie Delacroix, an aspiring young actress from the Comedie- Fran^aise who was also taking the road to Moscow at the Emperor's invitation, and for Emil love blossomed on that long and harrowing journey through the heat of summer. Nor was Alain immune to the charms of the beautiful Countess Anna Voskaya, who waited among the blackened ruins of Moscow for the return of her husband from the terrible Battle of Borodino. But the heat of summer gave way to the bitter chill of a Russian winter, and the first and only consideration became survival.
