We've all heard of the old lady who swallowed a fly, but what about the old laddie who swallowed a flea? Evidently, he had more eclectic tastes than his distant relative, bingeing on a diet that included piranha, 'possum, stork, wapiti, giraffe, and squid. Acclaimed author Jean Little breathes a fresh spirit into an old story, and Rose Cowles's wicked illustrations add a whole new life to this quirky retelling of the cherished old rhyme, "There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly." AUTHOR BIOS: Jean Little is the award-winning author of more than twenty books for children. Her last book was the well-received collection of poems and stories, What Will the Robin Do Then? Recently, she has been shortlisted for the Ruth Schwartz award for her first historical book, The Belonging Place. Her picture books include Once Upon a Golden Apple, Jess Was the Brave One and Revenge of the Small Small. His Banner Over Me won the 1996 Violet Downey Book Award. Gruntle Piggle Takes Off was nominated for a Governor General's Award for illustration. Her work has been translated into French, German, Greek, Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Japanese and braille. She lives near Elora, Ontario with her sister and great-niece and -nephew, and a menagerie of animals. Rose Cowles is an artist and designer in Victoria, B.C.
