Jake "Runt" Sender is a cowboy. He's an ornery old western character, a throwback to a time in our nation's history when men set out on their own to blaze new trails in a wilderness land. His story is that of many western pioneers that shaped the American frontier. He is from a simpler age, and he sees life differently from other men. He's been a cowboy since turning sixteen years old, driving Texas cattle up the Chisholm, Santa Fe, and Western Trails to railheads in Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming.
Now Jake is an old man reminiscing about his life, telling it from his own unique point of view. He'll share stories of driving cattle, prospecting for gold, wrangling wild mustangs, getting lost in the desert, taking a cross-country train ride to visit the big city, and many other adventures and mishaps. So pour yourself a cup of strong range coffee, lean back against your saddle, and settle in to hear tales of one man's life and the shaping of a frontier.

My First Cattle Drive is the first in a series of short stories that will appear under the heading of Runt - A Cowboy's Story. His diction won't be perfect, and he may get a little bawdy on occasion, but that's just how it was in the old west. These stories are written in 19th Century first person western vernacular, so imagine yourself sitting around a blazing campfire or bellied up to the bar in a cow town saloon listening to Runt Sender tell his life's story. You may even learn something about our nation's expanding years. I hope you enjoy the adventures and misadventures of this crusty old character from a time when the west was young.
