Sarah: She’s twenty years old adventurous, stubborn and very beautiful. Sarah and her mother had just finished entertaining another one of her many suitors and she’s bored to death. She now knows for sure she has to move away. The big question is to where and how. At the local general store the following day, Sarah stumbles upon a copy of the “Matrimonial Times” publication and takes it home with her. Therein, she comes across the many ads from eligible bachelors from the west. She answers one of them and a gentleman in Bellevue, Nebraska replies and a correspondence is established.

Gilbert: He’s thirty years old, hardworking and runs a successful hotel in Bellevue. He came to America when he was only twenty years old from Ireland determined to become a success and he had. He feels it’s time he gets married and settles down. He discusses the issue with his long time friend and butler Arthur, who advices him to get a mail order bride. He posts his ad and a young lady in Missouri answers. He proposes marriage, she agrees and she’s soon on her way to Nebraska.

For Sarah and Gilbert it was love at first sight, and they get married the day after her arrival. On the following day tragedy strikes. Gilbert slips and falls down the stairs in his hotel and dies leaving behind a grieving young widow. Determined to continue with his legacy, Sarah decides to stay.
