Bounty Girl

(1985)
A novel by

Facing pauperdom in early Victorian England, eighteen-year-old Leopoldine Charlotte Dobbs chose to emigrate to New South Wales as a despised bounty girl. She and Mary Tremaine found work at Ravenglass, an inland property. Unlike the pretty and educated Mary, Leopoldine accepted her life - until she fell hopelessly in love. Lucas Johns, the overseer, was an ex-convict and a man of uncertain moods. He was also involved with Ravenglass's widowed mistress. As Leopoldine herself said, all her life had been hard, but it had not prepared her for the trials she would encounter before she found happiness with a good man.
