Hostage of Love

(1983)
A novel by

Pretty Emma Tregear was the only child of a Van Diemen's Land magnate, and desperately in love. From the moment she met Philip Despard, she was unable to forget him, and she believed her feelings were reciprocated. Unfortunately, handsome Philip was a ticket-of-leave man, or convict on parole.
Because she had been raised to be dutiful, Emma yielded to her father's iron will, and accepted Captain Adam Ansell's proposal of marriage. Ansell was her father's partner, and could have been considered an opportunist and fortune hunter. Supervised by her socially ambitious stepmother, wedding arrangements moved ahead inexorably. Then, Emma had a chance to escape, and she made a decision which plunged her into frightful peril. Too late, she learned that people are not always what they seem - and yet, in the midst of danger and tragedy, she found her way to happiness.
