Every year after the solstice candles burn down, Mosshollow empties out. Coaches leave for the coast. The folk roads open for the ones who go home the older ways. Phoenix Firebolt stays, because the post never closes, and she has grown quietly used to a village with nobody in it.

This year the snow comes during the sky letters. By morning the valley is shut. The coach road, the coast path, the gnome tunnels, the grovekeepers' root-ways, the troll bridge that waives its toll one night a year: all of them closed, and every soul in Mosshollow still standing in it.

Which means Oak's sister's table is three valleys away. Pim and Sorrel's first married midwinter is happening without his family's bell. Gale will not go to sea. And a dozen different folk, each with a holiday they have always kept somewhere else, are looking at the one building that is always open and the one carrier who never had a tradition of her own.

Mayor Sawyer wants a single village midwinter. The grovekeepers want to know why the humans intend to hang things on a tree. Parsnip wants sardines, and has opinions about the wreath.

Phoenix has a snowbound post, an undelivered stack of letters with nowhere to go, and a drawer under the tree holding something that has never had a name. She also has, for the first time, a whole village home on the same night, and every one of them looking to her to say what happens next.
