A bricklayer in San Francisco travels south on horseback, and near Soledad, he hears of trouble with some of those holding Spanish and Mexican land grants. Twenty miles from Soledad he runs into one of these families. An unscrupulous lawyer in Monterey has the county impose taxes that are impossible to pay, and when the family goes to court and validates their title and proves the taxes are unjust, the lawyer sends gunmen to take the rancho by force. It's a tale of how the bricklayer becomes a part of the family, marries into it and brings a lasting peace to the Castañedas. From the pen of R. O. Lane.
