A Civil War engineer heads west to build a new life after losing his wife and son. He's built a cattle ranch in Wyoming when a young boy asks the engineer to take him in. The engineer adopts the boy named Tom, and he grows up in the late 1870s and early 80s in Wyoming. Tom, age 16, meets a Scottish lass and falls in love, but the lass's father is vehemently opposed.
