Burt and his half sister, Maria, try to understand their deceased father, a surveyor who was seldom home when they were growing up, but he left notes and wrote letters. His notes show he found a gold discovery in the Huachuca Mountains of Arizona, a place infested with not-so-friendly Apache bands. This is the story of trying to recover that gold and stay alive to carry it home. The gold is only the means for buying a place on the Mogollon Rim, a place their father had seen in his travels and which he detailed in his travels.
