(1984)
(Death In The Rain)
(The fifth book in the Dan Mallett series)
A novel by

Since her husband had died Lady Dodds-Freeman had been hitting the bottle in no uncertain terms. She'd even sold the family silver to buy drink. Dan Mallett who did her garden for her when he wasn't off poaching and thieving somewhere was getting worried about her.
Then the body of one of the neighbours was found in her Ladyship's flat, her head smashed in with a gin bottle. And a lot of money was missing. Lady Dodds-Freeman hadn't heard a thing, but suspicion naturally fell on Dan, as suspicion tended to in those parts.
Of course he had an alibi: he'd been busy stealing a horse, but since this wasn't the kind of thing that would stand up too well in court, Dan was obliged to do some looking around himself and bring the real killer to book in his stead...
