Unsuitably Yours

(2026)
(The prequel to the Waverley series)
A novel by

Unsuitable. Underlined twice. Entirely hers.
London, 1820. Cecilia Hartwell-Doyle has been out for seven years and has survived them by mastering a single skill: being present without being audible. Her mother — a widow with the strategic instincts of a field marshal and a campaign for her daughter's hand that has already outlasted most European wars — maintains a list of acceptable gentlemen. Six pages. Ranked. Annotated.
Thomas Faulkner is not on it.
No title, a grandfather in trade, and a disconcerting habit of noticing exactly what Cecilia is not saying — Mr. Faulkner is, by every criterion her mother has ever published, entirely out of the question. So far out of the question, in fact, that upon discovering the danger, Mrs. Hartwell-Doyle opens a second document. It has one entry. The heading reads
Unsuitable — underlined twice. She has weighted the corners.
Unfortunately for the list, Cecilia has kept a list of her own for seven years. It exists nowhere but in her head. And the last item on it is about to be said out loud.
