Stephen Lovely graduated from Kenyon College and the Iowa Writers' Workshop. For seven years he worked as a night clerk in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where the idea for this novel was born. He lives in Iowa City, and he is the Director of the Iowa Young Writers' Studio.
