1998 British Fantasy Award for Best Novel (nominee)
At a service station Rick catches a glimpse of somebody he thinks he recognizes. The girl he thinks he's seen is Penny, his ex-girlfriend, who was brutally murdered and left to rot in a ditch eight years earlier. After unsuccessfully chasing this person, Rick explains the situation to his wife Liz, who thinks her husband has gone mad. Rick is still trying to come to terms with what happened when he is woken up by a phone call from someone who claims to have been there the night Penny was murdered. As the story of evil unfolds Rick is thrust into a nightmare world where he must save his ex-girlfriend. But how do you save someone who is already dead?
