Amber's been a child for what seems like forever. She's unaware that she's a wizard and that her magic has been protecting her by keeping her young for decades. But now her magic has determined that being young is no longer sufficient protection and she's making up for lost time.
Charles watches over the city, looking for budding wizards so he can train them, or at least warn them, before they get into serious trouble. When he discovers Amber, a young-looking girl who's been living with street gangs for a long time, he also discovers that there's more to her than meets the eye.
Together, the two of them discover an old problem in the city. Amber's parents disappeared as a result of it and even though it was before Charles' time, he'd still like to find out what happened to all those wizards decades ago. With a new problem in the city that may be tied to the old one, they need to get to the bottom of both of them or Amber may be the next wizard to disappear.
