Fleeing from the massacre of the Huguenots, that began in Paris on St Bartholomew's Day in 1572, Gabrielle de Maret is captured by a pirate ship, the Salamander. The captain, a man who calls himself Solitaire, is both an intriguing and terrifying figure. Unfortunately for Gabrielle, she closely resembles his treacherous dead wife, and so inspires in him feelings of vengeance. Having escaped death once, Gabrielle finds that she is nothing more than a prisoner a slave in fact. Soon she is no longer shure who she fears most - Solitaire the pirate, or Solitaire the man!
