In a past that never was, a man is about to face his species' most dangerous enemy.

"I found you along the riverbank," the woman said. "Our father sent me a vision. Showed me where you laid, by a split oak, past the white water."
"Our father?"
The strange woman sat up and pushed the wolf skin aside, revealing the white skull of a raven, on a leather string, hanging between her breasts. "We both belong to the Crow," she said, her blackened fingernail following the arch of the skull's eye socket. Her voice was a low purr, and her eyes glinted in the firelight. "I asked the Crow. He sent me a vision. I saw you along the riverbank, by the split tree, and came to rescue you."
Her eyes sparkled. "Man from the hills. Killer of the long-fang. You should take your name from it."
Killer of the long-fang. He still wondered how had it not been the other way around.
"Your vision showed that, too?" he asked. "Where I come from, what brought me here. A powerful vision. Is that what you are? A woman of visions?"
