The battle to kick the Japs out of Guadalcanal is going to plan. Almost. Marines are working their way through the impenetrable jungles, seeking out the Japanese defenders. And killing them. Yet the jungle is dense and tangled, enough to hide an army.

Working their way along a trail deep in the forest, Jesse Ferrell and his buddy Dan O’Brien hear something that shouldn’t be there. The buzz of insects, the piping notes of bird song, the snorts and growls of wild animals are to be expected. But not the sound of steel blades, machetes, hacking through the dense foliage. It could be the Japs, hacking a path where no path ought to be. Or their own men, widening an overgrown trail to continue the advance.

They come across an Australian officer, a man familiar with the territory and  recruited to act as a guide. Until his unit was wiped out, and he is the sole survivor. They resume the search for the enemy, and the Aussie help guide them to where an overwhelming and heavily armed Japanese force is creating a new and secret trail. Their intention is obvious, to march into the rear of the main force of Marines and carry out a sneak attack where they least expect it. If they succeed, the much heralded American victory will become a bloody defeat. Yet the Japs are there in force, and the odds are in their favor. Unless the Marines of Company C can turn the tables using their own methods. A sneak attack.
