On the way to the Leinwschloss, the summer residence of the Crown Prince of Hanover, Lord Toll's coach is waylaid by a frantic girl, claiming to have witnessed a murder. Before her pursuers catch her up, and she is trampled to death beneath their horses' hooves, she entrusts her little girl to him.
