"The job of defence counsel is not to get to the truth. It's to find the lies that contradict the story you're selling the jury..."

Criminal barrister Charles Konig has been handed a case he'd rather hand back: to defend the husband of his ex-fiancée. Professor Edwin Fenton is accused of murdering celebrity historian and author Gideon Wolfe following a particularly confrontational recording of Wolfe's podcast, and in a hideous manner.

Four experts had been invited to a Northumbrian castle to record a special series on the possible murder of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun. But it was Wolfe himself whose murder hit the headlines, found one morning roasted inside a bronze statue of Anubis, god of the dead. And Edwin Fenton has no alibi and plenty of motive. Charles faces a prosecution whose case seems as airtight as the statue itself. But is the true murderer in the dock? Or in the witness box?
