In December 1745, Charles Edward Stuart, the ‘Bonnie Prince,’ and regent to the claimant king, James Francis Stuart, abandons his invasion of England. With his army plagued by desertions, sickness, casualties, and lacking support from English Jacobites, they retire into Scotland. Here he awaits the promised arrival of French allies bringing much needed soldiers and cannon. Charles intends to rebuild his army over the winter, drive out British Government forces occupying Edinburgh and Stirling, while contending with those Highland clans loyal to King George II's House of Hanover.
Despite the onset of winter, William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, grants the Jacobites no reprieve. Sullied by previous defeats and misfortunes, the British need a decisive victory. Cumberland vows to shatter, not just the Jacobite army, but its very soul. He promises to "give receipt in full" for the slaughter of surrendering Redcoats at Prestonpans, and the atrocities committed against English civilians during the Jacobite retreat into Scotland.
Fighting rages from Falkirk to Inverness, as Charles and Cumberland’s armies converge in the north. On the distant moor of Culloden, the Jacobite Uprisings, dating back nearly six decades, reach their culmination. Consumed by vengeance, atrocities are certain to follow. Combatants and innocents alike shall the suffer the worst cruelties as the Houses of Stuart and Hanover engage in one last blood-soaked fight for the Thrones of England and Scotland. Thus, the scars of The Forty-Five run deep to this day.
