Dread amid Dragons

Mystic Haven has one dead showman, a scavenger hunt that refuses to end, and rather more murder confessions than the constable needs. Fiona Shaw suspects the town has misunderstood the rules.
She had agreed to take a Saturday off. Juniper had supplied a team ribbon, Zane could manage the shop, and Gus had made leaving sound almost reasonable. Besides, mysterious silver dragons had appeared in windows all along Main Street, and Dormand Drakewell had turned their arrival into a scavenger hunt. Business was excellent. The neighbors were enjoying themselves. Theo distrusted the decorations, but three centuries of opinions had taught Fiona to expect reservations.
Then a riddle addressed to Team Teapot leads Fiona and Juniper to Dormand’s body, surrounded by nine silver dragons. It looks like a fall. Until fresh clues appear in the dead man’s handwriting, and a dragon interrupts a council meeting to announce, in Dormand’s own voice, that someone helped him die. The meeting does not improve from there.
Dormand has left instructions: follow the riddles in order, refuse the shortcuts, and trust the smallest dragon. He has also said the final dragon opens for whoever bears the guilt, which the town interprets with unfortunate enthusiasm. Soon the constable is receiving confessions from people who seem less interested in clearing their consciences than claiming a prize. Fiona knows the difference between answering a question and managing an audience. She used to be paid for it.
With Juniper working the puzzles, Theo questioning everyone’s judgment, and Gus quietly making sure she remembers supper, Fiona follows a trail through the town she has learned to call home. Her tea offers impressions when it pleases. Her neighbors offer explanations rather more freely. Neither is useful until she understands what has been left unsaid.
For once, Fiona wants to be part of this place without finding herself responsible for all of it. But someone has hidden a murder inside the town’s favorite entertainment, and the killer has heard the instructions too. She’ll have to read beyond the performance before Mystic Haven applauds the wrong ending.
