Howling Herbal Hullabaloo
(2027)(The seventh book in the All Hallows Magical Inn Mystery series)
A novel by Kat McGee
Some treasures are ordinary. Some ordinary things become treasures. And some treasures get people killed.
The Howling Herbal Hullabaloo is supposed to be a celebration of All Hallows' finest herbalists, and Evie Evermore has prepared the inn for a full house. Then one of the festival's most respected figures is found dead in the demonstration tent, and the town's resident wolf shifter, a soft-spoken fixture with a dramatic howl and a deep love of chamomile, becomes the prime suspect.
The murder weapon wasn't a spell or a poison. It was the victim's own bowl and pestle, an ordinary kitchen tool worn smooth by decades of use. It isn't magical, isn't valuable by any standard measure, and yet everyone in the festival seems to have wanted it. The dead herbalist's apprentice claims it was promised to her. A rival from the next town insists it's rightfully theirs. And the wolf shifter was seen holding it, looking confused and heartbroken.
With her sharp-nosed cat familiar cataloging herbal scents and rolling his eyes at human drama, her desk clerk creating a timeline of the festival's events, her animated skeleton reciting ominous verses about tools and their owners, and her deliveryman friend helping her search for clues among the drying racks and tea blends, Evie must discover why an ordinary bowl and pestle has inspired such extraordinary greed.
Because in All Hallows, the most dangerous secrets aren't hidden in enchanted artifacts. They're hidden in plain, unremarkable things that someone loved enough to kill for.
