(2025)
(The second book in the Second Chance Mystery series)
A Story by

When a celebrated dog trainer's methods prove deadly, it will take a shelter director's keen instincts to unleash the truth.

Six months after solving her first murder case, Olivia "Liv" Barnes is focused on expanding Second Chance Animal Shelter with the newly funded Douglas Whitman Memorial Veterinary Clinic. The Spring Festival charity dog show should be the perfect fundraising opportunity—especially when celebrity service dog trainer Jackson Matthews agrees to judge and showcase his training methods.

But when Matthews is found strangled with a specialized training lead, Liv discovers the famous trainer's reputation was built on deception. His highly praised service dog program for veterans has been extorting money from the very heroes it claimed to help, including local veteran Frank Reynolds.

As Sheriff Jim Cooper investigates, the evidence points to Frank as the prime suspect—he argued publicly with Matthews, his specialized hand lotion was found on the murder scene, and now he's disappeared. But Sergeant, Matthews's own highly trained German Shepherd who witnessed the crime, seems to be trying to communicate something important through his selective reactions to suspects.

With a service dog as their key witness and a missing veteran who may be either killer or victim, Liv must follow a trail of financial fraud, betrayal, and exploitation to collar the real murderer. Meanwhile, the shelter expansion project hangs in the balance, and Liv's budding relationship with Sheriff Cooper faces its first real test.

Can Liv uncover the truth before the killer strikes again? And in a case where everyone deserves a second chance, which second chance might prove deadly?
