A Story by

Nina Reeves moved to the mountain town of Shadowbrook eight years ago to escape the corporate world and pursue her passion for fabric and design. As owner of The Stitching Post, she's become the go-to expert for the town's costume enthusiasts, especially during October when everyone prepares for Shadowbrook's most important event of the year—the annual Halloween Costume Gala. This year, Nina has the honor of serving as one of the judges alongside the gala's five-time champion and notorious perfectionist, Judith Crane. But when Nina arrives at the community center early one October morning to retrieve her judging notes, she discovers Judith's body and realizes that someone at the preliminary judging party turned a celebration into something deadly.

With the gala postponed and half the town under suspicion, Nina finds herself caught between helping the police investigation and protecting people she's come to care about. Her best friends Marcus and Fiona join her in piecing together the puzzle, while her scruffy terrier Buttons occasionally sniffs out crucial evidence in his own unhelpful-but-endearing way. As Detective Sarah Brennan methodically interviews everyone who attended the party, Nina can't help but notice the web of resentments, professional rivalries, and long-held grudges that surrounded Judith. Between managing her shop's Halloween rush and trying to separate genuine grief from guilty behavior, Nina discovers that in a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business, the most dangerous secrets are often hiding in plain sight.
