Some second chances leave pawprints on the heart forever.

The town of Maple Ridge is buzzing with excitement as Liv Barnes-Cooper prepares for the inaugural Maple Ridge Pet Festival at her beloved Second Chance Animal Shelter. After years of hard work and dedication, the shelter has been transformed from a modest operation into a state-of-the-art facility, complete with a memorial garden honoring the shelter's greatest benefactor.

The garden's centerpiece—a magnificent bronze statue of Sir Barksalot, the distinguished poodle who started it all—is set to be unveiled by renowned sculptor Vanessa Mitchell. But when the artist arrives with her highly-trained Border Collie, Shadow, tension quickly follows. Vanessa's critical attitude and mysterious meetings with the mayor leave everyone on edge.

Then, on the morning of the festival, Liv discovers Vanessa's body in the memorial garden, struck down by one of her own sculpting tools. Even more troubling, a hidden compartment in the statue has been emptied of its contents, and Shadow is found traumatized and hiding in a storage shed.

As Liv and her husband Sheriff Jim Cooper investigate, they discover that Vanessa was no ordinary artist—she was conducting a secret investigation into an art forgery ring operating through Maple Ridge. With Shadow's help, whose specialized training allows her to detect forgeries with remarkable accuracy, Liv begins to unravel a web of deception involving respected community members.

Could the killer be Nathan Johnson, the hardware store owner whose craftsmanship Vanessa publicly criticized? Or Mayor Jenkins, who seems suspiciously anxious about Vanessa's threats? Perhaps Gregory Phillips, the wealthy philanthropist with a complicated past connection to the murdered sculptor?

With her pack of special-needs rescue dogs—including Sir Barksalot himself—by her side, Liv must solve her sixth shelter-related murder while giving Shadow the second chance she deserves. As the investigation deepens, she discovers that this distinguished canine detective might be the key not just to solving Vanessa's murder, but to a new chapter in the shelter's mission.
