He went west to escape his memories. She went west to fulfill a promise. Neither expected to find love in the wilderness.

After the death of her father and the loss of her wagon train, Beth Wills is abandoned on the banks of the Sweetwater River, feverish and left for dead. Rescued by a solitary mountain man and nursed back to health by the Shoshone, she survives—but her troubles are far from over. Her father’s land claim in Oregon will be forfeited if she cannot reach it before the year ends.

Bart Brown wants nothing more than to be left alone. Haunted by the things he witnessed—and did—as a soldier during the Mexican-American War, he has escaped civilization for the remote mountains of Wyoming, where he hopes the solitude will quiet his memories. The last thing he needs is a talkative young woman disrupting his carefully constructed isolation.

But when Beth is brought back to him just as winter threatens to close the mountains, Bart cannot abandon her a second time. And when she insists on risking the treacherous journey to Oregon, he reluctantly agrees to guide her.

With snow closing in, supplies dwindling, and danger lurking along the trail, Beth and Bart must depend on each other to survive. Yet the greatest challenge may not be the mountains around them, but the walls they've built around their hearts.

Beth longs for a future she promised her father she would claim. Bart longs for a past he wishes he could forget.

Can two wounded souls find forgiveness, faith, and love on a trail where survival itself seems impossible?
