When a Crescent Creek resident named Lenny Holland is murdered, his mother asks former private investigator Kate Reed to help the police discover the truth about her son's death. The initial inquiry connects three seemingly unrelated elements: a runaway dog at daybreak, a bank deposit containing counterfeit bills and a retirement community plagued by a series of thefts.
Besides working as the night watchman at Southside Lumber and playing in a Willie Nelson tribute band, the 40-year-old victim is known around the small Colorado town as a polite, unassuming Good Samaritan. Since his wallet, phone and other valuables are left behind by the killer, there's no easy explanation for the crime.
But as Kate interviews witnesses and gathers information, she learns about a curious discovery that Lenny made in the days before his death. She also comes across a collection of distinct clues and evidence, including a turquoise belt buckle, a collection of black duffel bags, a trio of cobblestones from a courtyard fountain, sheets of saffron stationery and one shell casing covered with two sets of fingerprints.
