For reindeer—at least the luckiest of us—the calendar year is focused on one very special day. Christmas Eve. And for the past three centuries, nearly all of those who work to deliver Christmas joy to children have had another secret. We are reindeer shifters. It’s not a full-time job, like the elves who work year-round, so most of us are only up at the North Pole for a short time before the big day for flight training. It is our favorite season, but, for the rest of the year, most of us live an ordinary life. My friends and I run a toymaking firm. We aren’t in competition with the big guy, but it was the only thing we could come up with that finished up for the year in the fall. Stores already have their orders for the holidays in stock and often on the shelves by then.

After surviving another holiday season full of happiness and joy and with the last of my close friends married, I am exhausted and little frustrated. Not that I hadn’t had dates. Oh, no.
