Wing of the Tern, the second book of the Pacific Vibrations trilogy, takes place in California where Paoa, who changes his name to Grady Bluebird, is set to attend a college prep school as an exchange student.
His experience in America begins horridly with the violent, untimely death of a future friend. He is then sent to a temporary home with unbearable surroundings and develops a crushing bout of homesickness. Suddenly, his circumstances change dramatically and he finds himself living with a host family on the oceanfront in Newport Beach. There Grady discovers friendship and acceptance and becomes passionately immersed in the art of surfing.
As he makes his way through high school, he grows in wisdom and strength, discovers unexpected personal relationships and faces life altering challenges. He finds himself increasingly drawn to life in California but cannot bear to abandon his island culture, his childhood friends and his mother forever.
Then, he rescues a young girl from a boat floundering in the surf and unwittingly exposes his beloved home islands to potential disaster.
