Paradise was perfect. The promises were even better.

When Carrie, 61, and Brad, 65, leave their comfortable life in Bozeman, Montana, for a new adventure in Panama, they move into a ‘brand-new, fully furnished’ apartment overlooking the jungle and think they’ve found paradise.

There’s just one problem. It isn’t furnished. There are no lamps. No pots. No bedside tables. For weeks, there aren’t even lights.

But there are promises. The furniture is coming. The butterfly sanctuary is coming. Residency will be easy. The spectacular art opening will attract movie stars, collectors, politicians and cardinals. Tomorrow, apparently, will be incredible.

As the promises become increasingly extravagant—and the missing bedside tables achieve almost mythical status—Carrie begins to wonder whether the cheeky monkeys in the rainforest are actually the most trustworthy characters she has met.

Then, just as Carrie and Brad consider investing more deeply in their Panamanian dream, two unexpected apartment viewings reveal something they were never meant to discover.

Funny, irreverent and ultimately uplifting, The Monkeys is a humorous short story about paradise, promises, friendship, fabulous absurdity—and the curious ways God sometimes protects us from getting exactly what we thought we wanted.

Because sometimes the miracle is receiving what you prayed for. And sometimes the miracle is discovering, just in time, why you shouldn’t.

A Love & Laughter Short Story: Inspired by the absurdities, adventures and unexpected wisdom of life in paradise.
