Evading an attempt to kill him and his escort, James Packard of Criminal Warfare Agencies goes to Auxonne in France to interview the widow of a Hungarian judge who committed suicide after receiving blackmail threats. The trail to catch the blackmailers leads Packard to Buenos Aries and on to Canelones in Uruguay. In the lush, hothouse cities of South America, Packard is caught up in violence and intrigue, in murder and in a desperate situation in the Argentine's steamy marshlands before he arrives at the truth.
