John Cane, having resigned his commission in the Royal Artillery, is hired for temporary security work. He is asked to investigate a blackmail case involving photographs of a government minister that could be very dangerous. Together with Special Branch's Chief Superintendent Fergus MacDown, Cane pursues his enquiries from a Huntingdonshire burial vault to the Yorkshire Dales.
