This enthralling trilogy follows the sixty-year career of Tom Chatto as he crosses the Earth and climbs the naval ladder from apprentice to lieutenant.

Beginning in the late nineteenth century in Apprentice to the Sea, with the British Empire at the height of its powers, McCutchan captures the sense of wonder a young teenage sailor setting sail on his first voyage would have felt at the time - as well as the grim realities of sea life that followed. A murder on board sets Chatto's career off as he is embroiled in the plot and is forced to sink or swim.

Second Mate heralds the dawn of the steamship era at the turn of the century. Chatto, now determined to rise to second officer, has his ambitions thwarted when a face from the past seeks revenge. It soon seems that navigating the treacherous Cape Horn isn't the only threat on board...

In The New Lieutenant, the trilogy closes with the onset of the First World War where the oceans have become even more hostile. Chatto eagerly joins the Royal Navy Reserve to tackle the German U-Boat threat, but soon finds himself in deeper waters than he ever could have imagined.

Praise for Philip McCutchan

'A first rate adventure series.' - Publishers Weekly

'A nautical war buff's feast...[McCutchan] keeps an authoritative hand on the wheel and his descriptions of battles at sea ring with laconic truth.' - The New York Times Book Review

'His character conflicts are well organised.' - Daily Telegraph

Philip McCutchan grew up in the naval atmosphere of Portsmouth Dockyard and developed a lifetime's interest in the sea. Military history was an early interest of his, resulting in several fiction books about the British Army and its campaigns, especially in the last 150 years. He served throughout WWII in a variety of ships, including the cruiser Vindictive, the ocean boarding vessel Largs, and the escort carrier Ravager, ending the war as a lieutenant, RNVR.
