Just a Song at Twilight is a play for two men and four women. Seated in wheelchairs in their ""Home"" the three old ladies eke out their fading lives in a mixture of shadowy realities, occasional sharp perceptions, and dreams of the past, humoured by the kind, efficient Nurse. At one moment their secret feelings are symbolized in a macabre song and dance. But Nurse also has dreams-concerned with the visiting Vicar. When he dies suddenly her dreams are transferred to his successor. All is unsubstantial-and when the lights flash up at the end of the play no-one and nothing is left on the empty stage.
