(1985)
A novel by

When Gretchen decides to spend a year on the south-west coast of Ireland she knows that she is entering a world quite different from that of her strict Pennsylvania childhood. To her parents, Ireland is teeming with alcoholics and slipshod Catholics. To Gretchen, it is the native home of mystery and rapture. It does not take her long, however, in the dilapidated grandeur of Dufresne Hall - where squalor rules and nothing works - to change her views. But she finds a new direction for her feelings in a personal involvement that surprises and overwhelms her.
