A novel by

One day, fifteen year old Dan Malloy was standing in a Portland, Oregon juvenile court facing a judge; the next he's serving parole at a small family farm in the Columbia River Gorge. Dan learns to accept the eery quiet of rural life, but he can't get used to taking orders from the farm's patriarch, Mr. Edwards. He doesn't take well to authority and rules, and that's just about all there is on the farm. Dan finds himself torn between his old, free life and this new reality - life and death on a farm, a powerful river, and the kind of family he's never known.
