Johnny Barlow's friend, Matt Melville, was shot just as Johnny rode into Rawhide City. Now missing is the satchel of gold Matt was carrying. Johnny, a border ranger, suspects that his friend's murder and the missing gold might have been intentional. First, the sheriff ordered him to turn in his guns, then gave him one hour to get out of town. Later that night, someone took a shot at Johnny.

But Johnny is a Ranger -- and Ranger's are a persistent lot. There are too many holes in the story he was told, and he's determined to unravel the tangled web of mysteries. There's the murder of a harmless man . . . a lot of missing loot . . . and the missing body of the man who presumably killer Matt.
