A novel by

"Not every man is given the thrill of reading his own obituary notice"

After reading his own obituary (or, rather, the obituary of a man wearing his very clothes!) Captain Bernard Newman travels to the sunny landscapes of Spain in order to investigate the mystery.

Upon discovering the dead man who has been mistaken for him is actually a Romani member of the clan of El Manco, Captain Newman must again make use of his gift for acting and pose as a gypsy himself in order to infiltrate the clan. His adventure will force him to marry Mitza, a fearless young gypsy girl for whom he grows strong affections, and travel the Peninsula using various disguises.

But Spain is on the verge of a civil war and conflicts between Fascists and Communists will put Captain Newman's life in danger once more. When he discovers a plot to capture Gibraltar, Newman realises this case might be more dangerous than he had first expected...And then there is Mitza to contend with.
