The people of Moscow in the late 1940s are tired, poverty-stricken and deeply suspicious of foreigners. Finding himself detained merely for being an outsider in the country, spy-catcher and traveller Bernard Newman is helped to freedom by a friend, Colonel Brussilov, only to find a bloodied corpse in his hotel.
