Eddie takes interest in a woman named Emma who comes to the town of Cold Springs and goes to work at the Owl Cafe. Eddie feels very drawn to her, and he knows she must think he is just a kid. But she is friendly to him, and she does not cross any bounds of proper behavior. Eddie learns of Emma's real purpose when she shows up with her lawyer at the home where Eddie, his sister Rebecca, and their respectable father have lived since the death of Eddie's mother.
