Jimmy Clevis, the cowboy detective from Red Wind Crossing, Rancho Alegre, and Raven Springs, is asked by his girlfriend Magdalena to find her cousin Rose. Jimmy's mission takes him into rough country, through the dangerous town of Hartville and into the Haystack Hills, where Rose is working as a cook for a shady ranch outfit in a box canyon. Jimmy has to get Rose out of there, but first he has to convince her she can trust him. Even then, there's only one way out, through a cleft in a sandstone bluff.
