The date is 1208
The body of a young woman is found floating in the river at Durley in the Forest of Savernake. Sir Aumary Belvoir, warden of the forest and constable of the county of Wiltshire is convinced the girl has been murdered. Secreted among her belongings is a small drawing showing the astrological sign of Aquarius and Aumary wonders if the murderer is trying to draw attention to the girl's birth sign. But why they should wish to do this is a mystery. When another body of a young woman is found in the nearby town of Marlborough, Aumary becomes certain that the same killer is involved. He is certain when a small drawing of a bull, the sign of Taurus, is found in the girl's clothes.The bodies and drawings of astrological signs pile up and Sir Aumary is totally at a loss to find a connection between any of the victims. None of them know each other.
He begins to wonder if there actually is a connection at all? Are these just random killings? The constable decides the murderer must be a madman.
