After the devastating events of winter, he must wear the red robes of a Fire Acolyte and begin training to become a Battlemage. His dreams of working the weather are ruined; he will learn magic to kill the enemies of the Empire, and at year's end, he will be sent to war.
In Morcaster, the streets are also dangerous. The Pact, the peace between the Nine Lords, remains tenuous as ever. While Martel has no desire to tangle with the underworld, a possible war between the crime lords also endangers his friends among the less fortunate of the city. And when a relic is stolen to threaten that very Pact, Martel is the only mage that can prevent blood flowing on the streets.
