CLARA WEBER
The notary's office smelled like old paper and hurry.
The man sitting across from me had an empire in his last name, a lawyer on either side, and the expression of someone signing off on a corporate acquisition. Which, in a way, he was. The company was me.
"There's a clause missing," I said.
The lawyers flipped through the pages, flustered. He didn't. He just looked at me, slowly, like a man waiting for my next miscalculation.
I reached my hand across the contract. Not my whole hand.
My pinky.
"We don't lie to each other beyond what we've already agreed on. You don't humiliate me. And when it's over, it ends peacefully." I held that gray stare that looked like it had never asked anyone for anything. "Promise?"
MAXIMILIAN BRANDT
I hadn't made a promise since I was twelve.
Contracts, sure. Contracts have clauses, penalties, a designated jurisdiction. Promises have nothing. A promise is somebody's word and I knew better than anyone exactly what somebody's word is worth.
And there she was. A florist with green eyes, a dachshund waiting outside, and her pinky held out over a half-million-euro contract.
A pinky. No legal precedent. No binding value. No guarantee whatsoever.
"I promise." And because every negotiation demands something in return, I added my own clause. "Six months, and no feelings. Promise?"
She smiled like a woman closing a terrible deal on purpose.
"I promise."
We both signed. We both shook on it. We both lied.
