I FEEL that I exposed myself to a most alarming comparison in consenting to write 'A History of Scotland for the Young '-a comparison which I most earnestly deprecate, and implore the gentle reader, even the critic whose part it is not to be gentle but just, not to make. I am told, though it is scarcely my own opinion, that each generation has need of its own books, notwithstanding the existence of much better books belonging to an earlier time. Our much-beloved Sir Walter, ever gentle, ever kind, will forgive the grandmother who comes humbly after hiln. I trust that all who take this little book in hand will do so too.
